Bollywood's upcoming spy comedy Udta Teer, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan, has found itself at the centre of controversy ahead of its scheduled October 23, 2026, theatrical release. Nepal has reportedly banned the film over its India-Pakistan storyline, while a promotional appearance at the Wagah border has gone viral after music played from the Pakistani side drowned out the actors' remarks.
The developments have brought unexpected attention to a film that combines espionage, patriotism and comedy, raising questions about the sensitivities surrounding cross-border stories in South Asian cinema.
Nepal Bans ‘Udta Teer’ Before Its Release
According to a report published by The Indian Express on October 21, Nepal's Central Film Censor Board prohibited the film from screening in the country under Section 8(3) of the National Cinema (Production, Exhibition and Distribution) Act, 2026.
The report, citing Nepalese outlet Onlinekhabar, said the decision was linked to the film's storyline involving tensions between India and Pakistan.
Film critic Samipyaraj Timilsina reportedly explained that Nepal's regulations allow authorities to restrict films considered potentially harmful to another country's image or relations with friendly nations.
The reported ban adds an international complication to the film's release. However, it does not mean the film has been banned in India, where its theatrical release remains scheduled for October 23.
Wagah Border Promotion Takes an Unexpected Turn
The controversy gained another talking point after Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan visited the Attari-Wagah border on October 21 to promote the film.
According to The Indian Express, videos circulating on social media showed the actors attempting to address the audience from the Indian side while Atif Aslam's rendition of Tajdar-e-Haram, played over loudspeakers from the Pakistani side, made their remarks difficult to hear.
The incident quickly attracted attention online, with social media users discussing whether the music was an intentional attempt to disrupt the promotional event.
Although the incident was widely interpreted online as a deliberate interruption, the intention behind the music has not been independently established.
The episode nevertheless created an unexpected publicity moment for the film just before its release.
What Is ‘Udta Teer’ About?
Directed by Akash A Kaushik, Udta Teer is being promoted as a patriotic spy comedy.
Ayushmann Khurrana plays Bilal, a Pakistani intelligence operative who loses his memory after an accident and wakes up believing he is an officer in India's Counter-Terrorism Squad.
Sara Ali Khan plays a fellow officer who is unaware of his real identity. The resulting confusion sets up a story built around mistaken identity, espionage and humour.
The supporting cast includes Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Suhail Nayyar, Gulshan Grover, Mukul Dev, Raghubir Yadav and Supriya Pilgaonkar.
The film is produced by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, with Akash A Kaushik making his directorial debut.
Will the Controversy Help or Hurt the Film?
For film distributors, publicity can be a double-edged sword.
The Nepal ban and the viral Wagah incident have brought Udta Teer additional attention, potentially encouraging curious audiences to find out what the film is about. But controversy alone does not guarantee cinema attendance or commercial success.
The film's performance will ultimately depend on audience reception, reviews, storytelling and its ability to balance political sensitivity with comedy.
Its central premise also raises a broader question about how filmmakers approach India-Pakistan relations, a subject that can attract strong reactions even when treated through satire.
Whether audiences embrace the film or criticise its approach, Udta Teer has already become part of a wider conversation about entertainment, national identity and the boundaries of political humour.
