The Nigerian Army has commenced the deployment of 600 personnel to India for specialised jungle and mountain warfare training as the military seeks to strengthen its operational capabilities against terrorism, insurgency and other security threats.

The first batch of 300 soldiers departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday, October 22, aboard two Indian Air Force aircraft, according to a statement issued by the Army.

The aircraft included a C-17 military transport plane and an Airbus A321.

The remaining 300 personnel are expected to travel to India to complete the planned deployment, the Army said. <Cite refs={["turn260430search0","turn260430search4"]}/>

Why Are Nigerian Soldiers Going to India?

According to the Army, the training will focus on specialised techniques for operating in dense forests, mountainous regions and other difficult environments.

These terrains can present significant challenges for troops, particularly when confronting armed groups that use remote locations and forested areas as hideouts.

The programme is intended to improve the soldiers’ combat proficiency, adaptability and ability to carry out operations under demanding conditions.

The Army said the initiative forms part of efforts to build a professional and combat-ready force capable of responding to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges. <Cite refs={["turn260430search1","turn260430search4"]}/>

Army Leadership Oversees Deployment

The departure of the first batch was witnessed by Major General Umar Garba Yusuf, Coordinator of the Nigerian Military Training Support and Advisory Team at Army Headquarters, who represented the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.

The Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria was also present.

In its statement, the Army said the training supports the Chief of Army Staff’s priorities of realistic military instruction, personnel development, operational effectiveness and improved combat readiness. <Cite refs={["turn260430search0","turn260430search4"]}/>

What Could the Training Mean for Nigeria's Security?

Nigeria continues to face security challenges in several regions, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry and kidnapping in parts of the North-West, and other forms of armed criminal activity.

Specialised training in jungle and mountain warfare could help participating soldiers develop skills for operating in difficult terrain. However, the actual impact will depend on how the skills are applied after training and how effectively they are integrated into military operations.

The deployment itself does not establish that security threats will immediately decline, nor does it guarantee a particular operational outcome.

Nigeria–India Defence Cooperation

The programme also highlights military cooperation between Nigeria and India, particularly in professional training and capacity development.

By exposing personnel to specialised instruction in different operational environments, the Nigerian Army aims to improve its soldiers’ preparedness for complex assignments.

The Army has not disclosed further details about the training schedule, its cost or the precise locations where the soldiers will receive instruction.

The remaining deployment is expected to bring the total number of Nigerian personnel participating in the programme to 600.
