The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a 118-member National Campaign Council as the party intensifies preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The council brings together key party leaders, political figures and campaign officials tasked with coordinating the party’s nationwide mobilisation and communicating its political agenda to voters.
Under the new arrangement, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, the party’s national leader and former Bayelsa State governor, will serve as chairman of the council. Peter Obi, the NDC’s presidential candidate, has been named co-chairman, while Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s vice-presidential candidate, will serve as co-vice-chairman.
The NDC’s national chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, was appointed vice-chairman of the council, while the party’s national secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, will serve as council secretary.
Ibrahim Hussain Abdulkarim has been appointed Director-General of the presidential campaign.
Other Key Appointments
The campaign structure also includes several established political figures. Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has been named chairman of the National Campaign Advisory Council.
Other figures listed include Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Senator Victor Umeh, Buba Galadima, Victor Ogene, Dudu Manuga and other party officials.
The party also announced a 40-member National Campaign Advisory Council and appointed 37 state campaign coordinators to support its activities across the country.
Osa Director, the NDC’s national publicity secretary, has been named Director of Communication and Media, while retired Major General John Enenche, a former defence spokesperson, will oversee Security and Intelligence.
The appointments establish a formal structure for campaign communication, political coordination and mobilisation at the national and state levels.
NDC Promises an Issue-Based Campaign
In announcing the council, the party said its members would provide strategic leadership, coordinate campaign activities nationwide and mobilise support for its vision of a “new, just, and prosperous Nigeria.”
The NDC also called on its members and supporters to remain united as preparations for the elections gather momentum.
However, announcing a campaign council is only one stage of electoral preparation. The party will still need to translate its leadership structure into effective grassroots organisation, communicate clear policy proposals and demonstrate how its plans would address Nigerians’ concerns about the economy, security, employment, education and public services.
The effectiveness of the council will ultimately depend on how well its members coordinate activities across states and engage voters beyond the party’s established support base.
What This Means for the 2027 Elections
The announcement adds another development to the political positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections. With Obi and Kwankwaso occupying prominent roles in the NDC’s campaign leadership, the party is formalising the structure through which it intends to present its presidential ticket to Nigerians.
The council’s composition may help organise the party’s national campaign, but its electoral impact remains to be seen. Voters will be watching for the party’s policy direction, its ability to build strong local structures and the credibility of its promises.
For now, the unveiling marks an organisational step in the NDC’s preparations for the next election cycle. The next major test will be whether the new council can turn its appointments into a coordinated, nationwide campaign that connects with voters and presents a convincing alternative at the ballot box.
