One person has died and three others have been injured following the collapse of a building under construction in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State, raising fresh concerns about construction safety and enforcement of building regulations.

The incident occurred on Akinola Street, off Ikorodu Road, in the early hours of Friday, October 23. Emergency responders rescued three adult men alive from the rubble and recovered the body of another man, according to reports citing the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

Lagos Government Points to Alleged Non-Compliance

The Lagos State Government has blamed alleged construction violations and attempts to cut corners by the developer.

Speaking to journalists at the scene, LASEMA's Director of Operations, Olatunde Akinsanya, said the building had reportedly been served several notices by relevant authorities before it collapsed. He argued that compliance with those notices could have prevented the tragedy.

The government’s position raises questions about whether enforcement measures were sufficient to prevent construction from continuing at the site.

However, the precise technical cause of the collapse had not been conclusively established in the initial emergency reports. Investigations and structural assessments are therefore important before a final determination can be made.

Three Workers Rescued, One Person Confirmed Dead

Emergency teams responded to the incident and carried out search-and-rescue operations to locate people trapped beneath the debris.

The three survivors received medical attention before being transferred to hospital for further treatment. One of the injured men was reported to have sustained serious injuries.

Emergency responders included LASEMA personnel, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, ambulance teams and police officers. Heavy equipment was also deployed to assist the operation.

Authorities were working to establish whether additional workers remained trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

Nearby Buildings Also Face Safety Concerns

The incident has drawn attention to the condition of neighbouring structures. According to reports, buildings around the site showing visible cracks were expected to undergo further assessment.

A nearby resident told journalists that he narrowly escaped being caught in the collapse. His account highlights the danger such incidents can pose not only to construction workers but also to residents and passers-by.

The safety of surrounding buildings will be particularly important if structural damage or instability is confirmed.

Another Warning About Building Safety in Lagos

Building collapses remain a serious public-safety concern in Lagos, where rapid urban development places pressure on construction oversight, structural compliance and the monitoring of distressed buildings.

The Fadeyi incident comes after other deadly building failures in the state, including a collapse in the Alakija area in June that killed at least nine people, according to earlier reports.

The latest tragedy renews questions about how effectively stop-work notices are enforced, whether unsafe construction sites are adequately monitored, and what consequences follow when developers fail to comply with regulatory requirements.

What Happens Next?

Investigators will need to establish the structural cause of the collapse, determine whether the developer violated any applicable regulations, and assess whether any failures in oversight contributed to the incident.

For affected families, the immediate concern remains the recovery of the injured and support for the family of the deceased.

The incident also serves as a reminder that construction safety depends on more than regulations being issued. Those regulations must be enforced, and potentially unsafe buildings must be assessed before they put more lives at risk.
