From learning chess in a neighbourhood barbershop to building an initiative that empowers children through the game, Tunde Onakoya’s story is a reminder that talent can become a powerful tool for social change.
A Humble Beginning in Ikorodu
Born and raised in Isale Odo, Ikorodu, Lagos, Tunde Onakoya grew up in a family that faced financial challenges. His education was affected by difficulties paying school fees, but an unexpected discovery helped change the direction of his life.
He encountered chess at a neighbourhood barbershop, where he watched others play and gradually learned the game. What began as curiosity developed into a serious pursuit, opening doors to competitive chess and new educational opportunities.
Turning Personal Success into Social Impact
In 2018, Onakoya founded Chess in Slums Africa, an organisation that uses chess to help children develop critical thinking, discipline, confidence and problem-solving skills.
Its programmes have expanded to include educational opportunities, digital skills, scholarships and mentorship for children in underserved communities.
For Onakoya, the bigger achievement is not simply winning games. It is helping children discover their abilities and access opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach.
The 60-Hour Chess Marathon That Captured Global Attention
In April 2024, Onakoya played chess continuously for more than 60 hours in New York City's Times Square alongside American chess player Shawn Martinez.
The marathon attracted international attention and supported his advocacy for children's education. It helped introduce his work to a wider audience and reinforced his message that chess can serve as more than a competitive sport.
From the Chessboard to Paris Fashion Week
In October 2026, Onakoya travelled to Paris at the invitation of luxury fashion house Hermès. The invitation brought another dimension of his public identity into focus: his distinctive blend of Nigerian heritage, personal style and intellectual achievement.
His appearance illustrates how Nigerians are increasingly bringing their stories into international spaces beyond conventional entertainment and sports.
Another major ambition reported for Onakoya is the Lagos International Chess Festival, planned for October 2027, with chess, art, fashion and cultural experiences expected to feature.
The Bigger Lesson
Tunde Onakoya's journey offers three important lessons.
1. Your beginning does not determine your destination. Limited opportunities do not mean limited potential.
2. Success becomes more meaningful when it creates opportunities for others. His work with children demonstrates the importance of giving back.
3. Your identity can be an advantage. His Nigerian roots remain part of his story, even as his work reaches international audiences.
His journey reminds us that real influence is not measured only by fame or personal achievement, but also by the opportunities one creates for others.
